DANCING IN THE Dust: 12 TIPS FOR BURNING MAN NEWBIES

Hey Burners and Newbie Burners! As a seasoned nurse who has immersed herself in the unique world of Burning Man year after year, I've compiled a list of 12 essential tips to ensure your first Burn is not only unforgettable but also safe and enriching. From the dusty landscapes to the vibrant community spirit, here's a list of some things that will help you make the most of your Burning Man experience.

1. Respect Boundaries and Consent:

In a space that celebrates self-expression, respecting others' boundaries is crucial. Always ask before taking photos or engaging in physical contact, even a hug. Upholding a culture of consent contributes to a safe and positive environment.

2. Hydration is Non-Negotiable:

The desert climate can be harsh, and staying hydrated is paramount. Carry a reusable water bottle, a hydration backpack, and make a conscious effort to drink water regularly. Also consider some LiquidIV – the salt and sugar mix will help to keep you hydrated.

3. Foot Comfort is a Priority:

Invest in comfortable, closed-toe shoes or boots. The Playa demands a lot of walking, and ill-prepared feet can quickly turn your adventure into a painful experience. Bring moleskin or blister bandages just in case. Many burners wear Ace Power Boots, me included! You can find an example below.

4. Sun Protection Essentials:

Shield yourself from the intense desert sun. Pack high SPF sunscreen, quality sunglasses/goggles and a wide-brimmed hat. Opt for light, breathable clothing to stay cool while still protecting your skin.

5. Protect Your Eyes:

Dust storms can happen during the day and night, so pack a good pair of protective goggles to shield your eyes during playa adventures. Otherwise you'll need a visit to the medical tent for an eye wash and, possibly, medication for a scratched cornea.

6. Mind Your Respiratory Health:

In addition to your eyes, you also need to protect your lungs from the dust. Invest in a high-quality dust mask, neck gaitor, bandana to protect your respiratory system and ensure you can continue to enjoy the festivities even during a dust storm. I carry a N95 in my day pack at all times and I always pack a p100 mask to wear when I break down camp.

7. Illuminate Yourself:

Don't be a Darkwad! Stand out in the night with vibrant LED lights on your body and your bike. Not only does it add to the magical atmosphere, but it also helps others spot you in the dark, preventing collisions.

8. Embrace the Gift Economy:

Participate in the gift economy by bringing small, meaningful gifts to share with fellow burners. No, it isn't necessary to share tangible objects. Something like a hug or listening to someone can be considered a gift under the right circumstances. It's a beautiful way to connect and contribute to the communal spirit. 2023 I gifted water and food to Burners who were stuck on the playa due to the rain and mud. Remember that unconditional gift giving means that you shouldn't expect anything in return for your generosity.

9. Embrace Radical Self-Reliance:

Burning Man is an opportunity to practice self-reliance. Bring enough food, water, and essential supplies to sustain yourself throughout the event. Be proactive in meeting your own needs. Also remember that Burning Man is a Leave No Trace society.  Leave the Playa as pristine as you found it.

10. Stay Informed About Events:

Burning Man is filled with a myriad of events. Stay informed about the schedule, art installations, and performances to make the most of your time on the Playa. Rockstar Librarian posts musical acts. iBurn and Time to Burn are apps to download and update on your phone before you leave for the playa.

11. Prioritize Mental Health:

Amidst the excitement, remember to take breaks for your mental well-being. Seek out meditation and wellness camps for a quiet space to recharge and reflect. Make sure you are also getting enough sleep. There are plenty of events to enjoy every day. Don't worry about FOMO, because you won't have to chance to do everything in one week.  Burning Man is a marathon, not a sprint. Know your limits, get enough rest, and listen to your body to avoid burnout.

12. Plan for Emergencies:

Have a plan in case of emergencies. Share your camp location with friends, carry emergency contact information and insurance cards. Accidents happen, and preparation is key. Pack a first aid kit with bandages, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and any personal medications. Familiarize yourself with the locations of medical tents/ESD on the Playa.
