Surviving and Thriving:10 Wellness Tips for Festival Enthusiasts

Welcome, fellow Burners and music festival enthusiasts! As a seasoned nurse who has worked medical at Burning Man for many years, I've witnessed the incredible energy and creativity of these events. However, staying healthy amidst the dusty desert and vibrant festivities is crucial. Whether you're a first-timer or a veteran, here are 10 essential tips to keep you thriving throughout your adventure.

1. Embrace Community Care:

Look out for your fellow Burners and festival-goers, offering assistance or directing them to medical services and/other help when needed. PLUR, Peace Love Unity Respect, is a set of principles that is associated with rave culture that can be used across all festivals and events.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate:

Carry a reusable water bottle or hydration backpack at all times. Aim to drink at least one gallon of water each day if you are at in a hot environment or desert climate. You can find an example below.

3. Protect Your Skin:

Prioritize sun protection with high SPF sunscreen, and don't forget to reapply regularly. Lip balm with SPF is a must. 

4. Rest, Recharge and Mind Your Mental Health:

Create a comfortable sleeping oasis in your camp with a quality sleeping bag and earplugs to ensure a good night's rest. Take breaks when needed, practice mindfulness, and be aware of your mental well-being in the midst of festival excitement. 

5. Be Cautious with Substances:

If you choose to indulge, do so responsibly, knowing your limits and understanding the potential effects in the festival environment.

6. Emergency Awareness:

Pack a basic first aid kit with bandages, pain relievers, antiseptic wipes, and other essentials for unexpected situations. Share your camp location with friends and carry your emergency contact information on you and include allergies and pertinent health information for medical professionals.

7. Protect Your Ears:

Sometimes I like to be close to the speakers to feel them THUMP THUMP.  Invest in high-quality earplugs to shield your ears from loud music, preventing long-term hearing damage.

8. Mind Your Nutrition:

Don't forget to eat! Pack healthy snacks like fresh fruits, nuts, and granola bars to maintain energy levels throughout the festivities. 

9. Stay Informed:

Keep yourself updated on event schedules, weather forecasts, and any important announcements to plan your activities accordingly. 

10. Leave No Trace:

Embrace the Burning Man principle of "Leave No Trace" at all festivals by cleaning up after yourself and being mindful of your impact on the environment.
